Final magazine pages

Q 7 ) Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progressiong from it to the full product?

The answer to this question is included on this youtube video with annotations.

Q 6 ) What have you learnt about the process of constructing this product?

I  have used many different software and website technologies to produce my final magazine design...........

I have used serif heavily for the main construction. By using this I have learnt a lot about how to crop and frame photos to good sizes that fit on the page well. I have also learnt how to use text boxes and column alignment to set up the page correctly in a magazine style. I also used these text boxes to do captioning on the images. Additionally I used the title writing for the pull quotes of the magazine feature article. This has taught me the importance of sizing and cropping images down to the right size as it makes them look as good as possible and makes it easier for readers to be able to look and uderstand the photos without any unecssesary backiground space. It also helps (especially on the cover page) to keep a lot of room for other advertisements/article snippets/ pull quotes, for what going too be inside the magazine.

I used photoshop to edit certain pictures. I learnt about erasing backgrounds and making them blank so that they fit in with the magazine better. From this I learnt how useful photoshop is in the commercial world for getting picture perfect, in the colour scheme you want, so that they look presentable and also look of a high, Professional quality.

I have used the website DaFont.com too. I used this for the heading font of my double page spread. I learnt how to copy it from daFont.com and paste into serif then fix into place on the page. I then used serif to edit the colour of it. From doing this it has taught me how important using a recognisable font is in the industry of magazines, it helps to add to the look and makes it recognisable and memorable.

Finally I have used Blogger.com to publish all my work online for examining purposes and so I can categorise all the different sections of my coursework from 'Prelim' to 'Evaluation' so that its is easily accessible and I can then obtain feedback easily from students and teachers. Ive learnt, from using blogger, how to post written text, pictures, and embedded videos so that the can be viewed by teachers, examiners, and students. I have also learnt how to draft certain posts and edit certain post then updating them so improvements can easily be made.

I have used facebook for getting a lot of feedback for my ideas for the magazine pages. I did this by positng pictures on my timeline and asking my friends on facebook for the feedback I needed. From doing this I have learnt about how using social networking can be useful in the business world as it is open to so many different people meaning you are likely to get a big response.

Q 4 / 5 ) Who would be the audience of your media product? How would you attract / address your audience? ( linked )

 http://jackasnack.wix.com/jackcollier

The anwsers to these questions are on the website which is linked above.

Q 3 ) What sort of media instiution would distribute your media product and why?

I used facebook to get feedback for where my magazine would be sold. The answers to this showed that it may be sold in newsagents, supermarkets, kiosks, airports, stations, gigs, and online on websites for music or bands. This is because it should let the magazine gain a lot of publisity from people seeing it in many different places. Also it is where people would expect to find magazines, newsagents, supermarkets, etc. However it also uses newer more up to date methods such as online, gigs, and Band/Music Website.

This links to my intstitutional data as I said it shall be sold in a supermarket along with the other competitor magazines. It also links to Kerrang! and NME as they are both sold in supermarkets, however they are rarely sold online or at gigs which will give my magazine a U.S.P and/or lead in sales over its competitors (Kerrang! / N.M.E.) as I am selling in more places and am also going for a market niche at the same time.

Q 2 ) How does your media product represent particular social groups?

This is my Prezi done for the question, 'How does your media product represent particular social groups?'

Q 1 ) In what ways does your media product use, develop, or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

Below are the pictures for my flickr annotation comparisons.

3 2 1

In terms of genre, there are definate similarities between my magazine and the R.M.A. The colours used on my magazine represent the genre of magazine, and the genre of music my magazine writes about heavily, by using red's, blacks, and whites, which are all colours generally asociated with rock, metal, and punk.

There are some good ideas here. You start to unpick the questions well. Try and put in something about audience profile in your question 5. Which ICT methods are you using per question?

Final pages

Double page spread picture layout draft

This is a    picture i am testing to see whether it would look better as my DPS picture. I like it as its a good size and nice colouring, however it is rather blurry.

Double page spread development

I have added captions to the photos in this Double Page Spread development. I have also added page numbers. Overall i have arranged the writing into paragraphs so they are paragraphed and made easier to read..

Final contents development 1

This is my development of my contents page. i have added more photos to it to make it more eye catchng and to give people more of a preview for whats inside the magazine later. i have also moved the contents so its in the centre of the page so it is the centre of attention, but still gives the page number bits enough room.

Cover page development 3

This is my third development of my cover. I changed the main image for the double page spread to a close up so it stands out to people. I also changed a few fonts to make them stand out too.

Cover development 2

This is my cover so far, since last time ive added in more details for whats inside the magazine, ive also change colours of the competition advertisement so it links to the colours used inside and stands out a lot more. Overall im liking how the cover looks at the minute however i may change the main picture so being black and white so it links with the double page spread colours, however i may also need to change the shot to a close up so it will still stand out more.

Other picture for the contents page

These are the photos i will include on my contents page. This will be included in an article on 'Jackasnack.'

It will improve the look of the contents page as its more eye catching with more pictures. Also it will give people a small preview of the articles to expect within the magazine itself rather than just previewing the double page spread.

Cover development

For this draft of my cover i changed the main picture so it fits in with the magazine more and looks better quality. i also took out the big bold red lines to improve layout of the page as a whole.

Mrs D

Well done for hitting your deadline. I like your page design and layout. Some effective images - they need captions and are they easy to see? Don't forget about page numbers and range of font sizes.

Double page spread article text

The bits highlighted in red will be the pull quotes i use for this double page spread article.

As bands go, Tape It Shut have had an incredibly action packed year filled with touring, recording, and writing for their new album. This week we caught up with keyboardist Jac Whitehouse and talked to him about how their year has been and whats happening with the band in general and what will be happening with the band.

We met up with Jac outside the Tape It Shut tour bus in Oxford for the show at the Oxford O2 academy. We asked Jac how the touring was going so far, this is what he had to say..........

"This year has been a crazy year for us, i feel like we have visited every place on the Earth!", he admitted to both him and the rest of the band being absolutely ecstatic to be touring the world, despite it being very intense gigging. "It would be an understatement if i was to say this was easy for us, the amount of organisation and preparation the went behind making this tour work was insane and the work load was incredibly heavy! It was hard for all of us to leave our families and friends too, but i have to say it is all definitely worth it, each and every one of us on this tour, band members, management, tech, everyone is having the time of their lives." To prove this, Jac had given us some inside gossip on the goings on of the tour as it has progressed. "Oh man! Where do I begin! We have had some crazy s*** happening on this tour! Every night is a party for us! A few weeks ago in Sweden Andy (Drummer of Tape It Shut) got arrested for having nurofen! The cops thought it was a hallucinogenic drug or somethin'." And even that's not all this motley crew. "We lost Sean and Jack one time in France cos they went out drinking before a show and seemed to just go bar hopping, one bar to another. Then By the time it was show time we finally found them on a curb of a random backstreet talking to a random guy who was either a dealer or homeless, or both." So so far it sounds like there have been so crazy times with the Tape It Shut gang. We had to ask Jac how much trouble him and the band have got into with police and anyone else after hearing all of this. "Surprisingly, apart from the nurofen incident, we haven't had much contact with the police, we've had bar tenders threatening to through us out, and we've been barred from a few clubs, but apart from that we've been behaving ourselves." So apart from ALL of that they've been been keeping out of trouble. We asked Jac how playing the new songs off their third album is to their fans. "Its awesome! We are getting great reception from the crowd even when we play new songs off the album which arent big singles, its great!"

We are sure your all familiar with the big news of the preparation for Tape It Shut's fourth album, and Jac has some exciting news to add to this. "We are currently writing our new album whilst on tour, and may I just say, I know I'm bias here, but i have to say it's sounding brilliant!" Sounding like good news to you? Well here is what to expect for the fourth album, "We went a bit more experimental on this new album, more electronic stuff, which being the keyboardist is a nice addition to the sound for me. We took inspiration from people like Mindless Self Indulgence and Powerman 5000 for this next record, all of us have been listening to those two bands non stop recently, epecially Dan, he is obsessed with them both! I personally would  like to call it 'Space Punk' or somethin' like that." So it sounds like we will all be expecting something very new from Tape It Shut on this fourth album, but how do they think the fans will take it? "Each and every one of us understand that change is a big thing for a fan to deal with as its a change in sound and style which they may or may not like, but I can honestly say that although we have more electronics as i said, it is still us, we still have all the power chords and fast paced rhythms, you can tell its still us from the first song. We aren't going all electro dancey like Deadmau5 and Daft Punk, don't worry." Very trust worthy words there from Jac, looks like we will still seeing the band at the Reading and Leeds Lock Up Tent this year rather than The Dance Tent, so Tape It Shut fans be not afraid.

This then brings us on to the last subject of our interview with Jac. Now the massive success of the bands third album and the writing of the fourth album isn't the only big news revolving around Tape It Shut at this moment in time. There appears to be a big rumour spreading around rock fans everywhere that there is a co-headliner tour for the band which will visit America and Europe is planned with none other than the punk band Launch Control. We decided to interrogate Jac on this 'rumour', however he was playing his cards very close to his chest. "I can neither confirm, nor deny the possibility of this supposed tour with the lads of Launch Control, next question..." Judging by the big smirk on his face as he said this, it looks like this tour may be more than just a rumour..........

Double page spread draft 1

This is my first draft of my double page spread. I have taken two images, one for the main image and on for the side column on the right. I am going to arrange the writing around the main image on the left page and in two columns potentially on the right.

Mrs D

Well done for hitting your contents deadline. I'm still not a huge fan of the image here. I know you have worked on them but the fact that his arm is cropped off looks strange. I like your use of colour and the layout design works well. The stars could be better positioned and use a larger and different font style for the name of the band. Keep up the good work.

Final Double Page Spread heading

I decided to use a completely new font as the main audience feedback of my last logo was that they arent relevant enogh to rock and dont represent the specific genre well.

This new font I am using got good feedback as it reflects the genre very well and gives a redellious punky feel.

Main heading for double page spread font

These are my font ideas for the main heading of my double page spread. I will get audience feedback on them soon.

Final draft of contents page (with audience feedback)

This is my final contents draft. Since last time i have finished all page numbers/references, with the added descriptions. Ive also changed the colour of all the headings for these page references. Ive also added a picture to my editors message and made the font more readable. Ive also finished the details for the meet and greet competition. Overall i like the way it has turned out as it is very eye catching and  still links to the cover.

 AUDIENCE FEEDBACK

What went well:
  • Nice colour scheme.
  • Well separated.
  • Links to cover very well.
  • Nice Editors message
  • Good detail
What could be improved:
  • Refernece page titles could be a different font as well as colour.
  • More pictures
  • Less cramped
  • Seems very crammed together in places

2nd Draft contents

This my second draft of my contents. since last time I have added more page descriptions and page numbers. Ive also moved the editors message to the opposite bottom corner of the page so I have more room to finish the page descritions and still have a nice amount of room for the editors message. However I will be changing the font of this editors message as i is ver thick an a lot of the letter seem to merge into each other because of this making it overall harder for people reading the magazine to read the editors message and be able to tell what I have written.

1st draft contents

This is how far i have got with my contents so far, I think it is going well, but there is still a lot to do such as more writing and competition writting description.

I inserted a star shape to advertise the competition, i also added text boxes for all the writing parts.

Monday, 25 February 2013

Mrs D

Well done for hitting your deadline. Your front cover draft has clear links to genre and audience with your Masthead - particularly with the choice of font. I'm not a big fan of the red lines all over the cover - go back to your RMAs to help with column alignment. Don't forget that you could use the image elsewhere if it doesn't work on the front cover.

Contents pre-construction

This is another example of a possible layout to take inspiration from when constructing my own layout for the contents.

There are good parts of this contents such as a lot of spacing and splitting up between the separate bits of writing making it easier for them to be read by people. Also there is a good amount of pictures used to grab peoples attention and to get them to read the article of the featured pictures. The colours and fonts used also reflect the metal genre that the magazine portrays, however the use of colours isn't bright meaning colour-wise the magazine isn't very eye catching.

Ive learnt from this to use fonts and colours relevant to my music genre of which my magazine will portray (Rock), however i need to use eye catching colours too with lots of pictures.

Saturday, 23 February 2013

Contents pre-construction

I have been looking at different cover layouts to possibly use similar styles for my magazine.

This layout taken from Kerrang! magazine has good features such as a nice presentable layout were most things have a good amount of space to present to viewers, also the colours are nice and bright making them eye catching to people so they are more likely to read the contents page.

However there are a few little bits such as the quote in the top right corner which could be given a little more room to make it more noticeable to people so they will be more liable to read it.

Overall I've learnt to include a lot of detail on my contents page, however don't over fill it with information and cram all the content together.

Audience feedback

I obtained all my audience feedback from asking individuals on what was good about my magazine cover page, and what could be improved on the magazine cover page.

Good:
  • Stuck to rule of 3 main colours
  • Nice theme, fit in with genre well
  • Easy to tell what genre it is
  • Eye catching
Improvements:
  • Less crammed together
  • More pictures, less writing
  • Better quality main image

With this audience feedback i have learnt that i will need to concentrate more on using better photos and using less writing nd more pictures which may make the cover look less cramped.

4th Draft cover (final cover plan)

This is my fourth draft of my cover. I split up all the pictures and writing for different features that are inside the magazine using borders which are red to fit in with the theme of the magazine. I like this design as it stands out a lot and I think it looks very unique. However it can look a bit cramped in some places with a lot of writing on the cover and not many pictures.

3rd draft cover

This is the 3rd draft of my front cover. Since last time i have chosen some of the writing placement and colour. Also I made a box on the left hand side for were the posters are going to be placed. I like this design as its clearly laid out and writing is readable and stands out a lot.

Front cover update

Ive have been cropping aroud my main image for the front of the magazine so i can have it on a blank background. This took a lot of time as ive had to cut round the two band members heads whilst keeping the shape of their heads in tact. Once i positioned that i experimented with colors to use for the main heading of the magazine and the featured article headings and placement of these headings.

Tuesday, 12 February 2013

2nd draft cover (layout idea)

This picture is my first idea of were i will position my writng for the main magazine title. I like it as it is very clearly distinguished apart from the picture. However the title could be bigger to make it stand out a lot more.

1st draft cover (layout idea)

This is my first idea for the layout of my front cover. The picture will be positioned in the way it is here with the writing fo the main magazine title, 'Rock Legends', above it. All over cover page features such as poster previews, and other bits of writing wil be posted around it. I like the idea and positioning of the photo used here, however the outline around both members of The Defiled is rough and makes the outline of them look distorted and strange.

Sunday, 10 February 2013

Main image for front cover of magazine

I plan to use this image for my front cover of the magazine, i plan to crop the image slightly by cutting down on either side of the image, however i will mostly crop the right hand side. This will make the image more portrait meaning it will fit on a sheet of A4 paper for the cover size better. It will hopefully fit to all cover dimensions.

Friday, 8 February 2013

Mrs D

Well done for hitting your planning deadline Jack. You have got a real sense of audeince and genre throughout your planning. I would like to see an original image for your front cover soon as I can't quite see how it will work with you test shots.

Double page spread layout design

This is my layout design for the double page spread. This is the design i wish to use as the images and writing are separated very clearly making it easier for the reader to understand. Also there is a good mix of pictures and writing so the pictures do not distract readers from the text. Also the use of a big title and big main photo gains readers attention so they are more likely to read the whole article.
